The hot springs were revered as a "healing place" by the natives
of the Coast Salish people who travelled by canoe to benefit
from their waters. The white man is said to have "discovered"
the hot springs after a trio of gold miners returning from
the Gold Rush of 1858, were attempting to make the shore during
a storm.
One of the paddlers fell into the seemingly frigid lake water
and astonished his companions by exclaiming that the water
was warm!
The water rights to the hot mineral water supply are still
held by the Harrison Hot Springs Resort. Guests staying in the
hotel are invited to use the indoor mineral pools at the hotel,
24 hours per day.
Visitors who stay in other accommodations, or just drive
up for the day, may enjoy the mineral water in the public
pool, which is located at the junction of Hot Springs Road
and the Esplanade. There is a nominal charge for using the
pool. Lockers and towels may be rented.
